A "Dirty Look" At That "Shady" Popcorn!

Picture
Grade: 7-8
"One of the primary and unique aims of art education is the education of vision. Seeing is enhanced when looking is attentive and when the requirements of the task demand attention to qualities of form that normally are neglected. One of the goals of art education is to awaken vision to the possibilities of sight"
-Elliot Eisner
Students created a macro-lense drawing of a kernel or couple of kernels of popcorn. They were encouraged to zoom in and really "see" the popcorn in a more attentive way then they have ever before. This was the beginning of a drawing unit where students focused on form, value and composition.

Self Generated Theme Paintings

Picture
Grade: 7-8
Students were told to think about a theme that they were interested in over a long period of time. During the development of each student's theme, they cooperatively discussed and suggested ideas with each other. Once they decided on a theme they were asked to bring in photos of their theme that they then used as a source for their paintings. This was a final culmination activity where students were asked to employ creative invention, knowledge and understanding of the elements and principles of art/design along with acrylic painting techniques.
